Sri Lanka's Hill Country Train: Kandy to Ella, the World's Prettiest Ride
Seven hours, tea country, and the Nine Arches Bridge. How to book, which side to sit, and where to break the journey.

Some train journeys are transport. The blue train from Kandy to Ella is a pilgrimage — seven hours of tea plantations, cloud forest and waterfalls, with the doors open and the wind in your face.
Book ahead or stand. Reserved second-class seats sell out weeks in advance on the booking site; observation class goes faster still. If you miss out, unreserved third class is chaotic but survivable — arrive at the platform an hour early and board fast.
Sit on the right-hand side leaving Kandy for the classic valley views. The climb is slow and gorgeous: Nanu Oya for Nuwara Eliya's tea factories, then the high plateau through cloud and rhododendron forest before the long descent into Ella.
Break the journey if you can: a night in Nuwara Eliya for the tea estates, another in Haputale for Lipton's Seat at dawn. The train is not going anywhere, and neither should you. Finish with the walk along the tracks to the Nine Arches Bridge, and time it for the crossing.
